He is a teacher educator whose career has been shaped by a commitment to equitable, inclusive education and the thoughtful application of emerging technologies in teaching and learning. Matthew’s early research focused on the full implementation and evaluation of Teacher Education in Sub‑Saharan Africa (TESSA) Open Educational Resources (OER), a foundation that inspired his ongoing advocacy for open, contextually relevant, and teacher‑centered innovations throughout the Global South. As a PhD candidate at the University of Georgia, USA (UGA) and a graduate researcher with the AI4STEM Education Center, UGA, Matthew was influenced by the Center’s pioneering work on AI in STEM education. He helped lead early nationwide webinars and cross‑cultural research collaborations between AI4STEM and universities in Ghana. Through these experiences, he recognized the growing fear of a widening digital divide and the critical absence of Africa-centered AI tools and frameworks. This reinforced his belief that AI integration in education must be guided by cultural relevance, equity, and local ownership to avoid reinforcing global inequalities. This vision gave rise to GenAI‑ERA, Generative AI for Education and Research in Africa, a nonprofit initiative dedicated to democratizing AI literacy, co‑creating culturally responsive AI tools, and building capacity among African educators to shape AI’s future in education. GenAI‑ERA has grown into a vibrant network, sometimes drawing over 500 educators, researchers, and students per session, with active engagement across Africa and beyond. This dream became a reality through the enthusiastic commitment of co‑founders and executive members who share a unified mission: to create inclusive, ethical, and transformative AI solutions for African education systems.
Generative AI for Education and Research in Africa
At GenAI‑ERA Hub, we aim to extend Generative AI literacy and resources to educators at all levels—teacher educators, in‑service teachers, and pre‑service teachers. By incorporating global benchmarks such as the UNESCO AI Literacy Framework, OECD AI Principles, and local education standards, our vision is to promote the responsible use of AI in classrooms and empower academic communities throughout Africa.
Empowering Educators Through Free GenAI Clubs & Hubs
Our mission is to establish accessible, free‑of‑charge GenAI clubs and hubs that offer hands‑on experience with AI tools and promote critical discussions on responsible AI applications. We focus on recruiting stakeholders from underrepresented regions—particularly in Global South—to foster global collaboration in innovative teaching, research, and assessment practices using GenAI.
Connecting Global Educators & Researchers
With bi‑weekly virtual and in‑person meetings, dynamic webinars, and collaborative research projects, GenAI‑ERA Hub bridges the digital divide by equipping educators with innovative tools, practical resources, and supportive cross‑cultural networking opportunities. Our initiatives empower international first‑generation students and established scholars alike to lead change within their communities.
